The Coraline movie is real magic

The Coraline movie is here! Neil Gaiman’s glorious young reader’s novel Coraline has been transformed into a stunningly engrossing movie helmed by none other than Henry Selick, the man that was in the director’s chair for the 1993 cult movie classic stop-motion feature film ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’. If anyone was able to bring Gaiman’s unnerving yarn of people with Button-eyes in an alternative vision of our own world, it would be Selick. The look of the Coraline movie is a superb example of stop-motion animation, a filmmaking method that can really be brilliant when executed well.
Where the novel was of the same odd and magical kind that we have come to expect and demand from Neil Gaiman, the look of the Coraline movie took several moviegoers unawares with its use of beautiful colour and the method of animation. The Coraline movie is a marvellous piece to take in, and will thrill viewers of every generation with its strange story and thoroughly entertaining cast of characters.
The voice talent that signed on to the stop motion adventures of the Coraline movie is rather impressive too. Dakota Fanning takes the lead role of Coraline Jones herself, and the rest of the cast has a host of British television legends involved, namely Ian McShane, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. Teri Hatcher gives the chilling voice of both versions of Coraline’s mother. The Coraline movie’s wisecracking cat is voiced by John Hodgman.
It is quite fitting that such a weird novel is brought to the screen in such a way as to capture the essence of a dream. Stop-motion has that wonderful otherworldly edge to it that Computer generated effects are yet to possess. There is something wonderfully odd about stop motion, especially here in the Coraline movie. It might be the knowledge that the viewer is witnessing inanimate objects moving around on the big screen, or it could just be that the finished vision of a stop-mo movie is so different to other animated movies of the current industry.
While the Coraline movie is not really as packed with iconic images as The Nightmare Before Christmas, it is certainly not without it’s visual joys. Just look out for the musical numbers, the weird transformations of the characters, and yes, the scary buttons that people have instead of eyes in the alternate universe. Viewers that haven’t read the story are in for a genuine treat as they are introduced to the scary world that Gaiman created, a world that is like ours, just somewhat skewed.
For people who have enjoyed the book (and it has been enjoyed by just as many adults as children), the Coraline Movie is as near a faithful representation of the original material as it’s possible to get. This is one children’s movie that will certainly become a much-loved classic for every generation. The Coraline film is pure magic.
