When you talk about funny people, Adam Sandler’s name usually comes up. It only makes sense as his upcoming movie, due out at the end of July 2009, is entitled Funny People. The movie is aptly named as it also stars Seth Rogan from Knocked Up and SuperBad fame. Funny People centers around a successful comedian (Sandler) who learns that he has less than a year to live. Needing some focus in his life, and more importantly companionship, he takes an upcoming comedian (Rogan) under his wing. The movie also features many well known comics playing the roles of themselves, such as Norm MacDonald, Sarah Silverman, and Andy Dick. With the ensemble and title, the movie threatens to kill audiences with laughter, but the plot suggests a deeper, more somber message. This wouldn’t be the first time comedy has had an affair with drama in Adam Sandler movies.

It’s hard to imagine that a dry eye could be spotted in the theater during his 2006 comedy Click. In the movie, Sandler plays an architect who acquires a miraculous remote that will control life around him. He uses it to skip through what he deems as useless sequences of his life only to find that his life has passed him by. Although the movie bolstered some incredibly funny scenes, the deeper message dwelled in the heart of the moviegoer.
2005’s The Longest Yard may have been a humorous remake of the Burt Reynolds’s classic, but it also had its moment of tear jerking. Unexpectedly, Chris Rock’s character, Caretaker, is murdered. This action may have not been a message of greater meaning through tragedy, but emotions surged at the death of this likable character.
The epitome of the Adam Sandler’s comedy/drama hybrid is Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love. In this movie, Sandler plays a small business owner who has become an introvert with tendencies toward violence because of his seven sisters’ mocking and overbearing ways. Through the course of the movie, he finds romance and then love with a woman who at first pursues him after seeing him in a picture. Later he follows her to Hawaii to continue the romance. Throughout the film, Sandler’s character is wrought with problematic matters, but in the end, true love prevails through meaningful words and frequent-flier miles.
Adam Sandler is known for his comedic performances and unbelievable storylines, but occasionally his movies will delve into a darker theme such as 2007’s Reign Over Me. Fans of Adam Sandler movies know that his comedies can sometimes lead to moments of heavy-heartedness. Whether or not Funny People will encroach upon tragedy is unclear. What is clear is that the movie looks to be another Adam Sandler winner.
