Most people have a favoured tv chef, whether for their dishes or their passion for cooking. Lets look at afew of the UKs much loved TV chefs.
- Gordon Ramsay. Most well know for Hells kitchen, Ramsay has a temper more fiery than his oven and a mouth dirter than his kitchens unwashed pans. One of only 3 chefs in the UK to have 3 michelin stars for his resturants at the same time. The public first recieved an ear full of profanity from the man in a documentary called boiling point. Boiling point saw Gordon trying to achieve his 3rd Michelin star, and made him an overnight celebrity. Other shows hes appeared in are Ramsays kitchen nightmares, the F word and hells kitchen. ‘Hells kitchen’ and ‘kitchen nightmares’ have also been re-made over in America, where even they arent safe from the abuse.
- Nigella Lawson. Daughter of former Conservative MP Nigel Lawson, she wrote the successful book ‘how to eat’ in 1998, and first appeared on tv with the show ‘Nigella bites’, which was aired in 2000 to 2001 on channel 4. The TV show won her TV Broadcast of the Year at the Guild of Food Writers Awards. Lawson’s approach to cuisine has won her many fans in America and over here. Though while popular with the pulbic, her daytime tv show ‘Nigella’ was cancelled after a week on air due to poor viewer figures. Having sold over 3 million books in total on cooking, i think its safe to say she feels more at home writing than presenting.
- Jamie Oliver. The BBC first saw Jamie while he was working as a sous chef in Fulham. The show the ‘Naked chef’ was the one that introduced him to the public, and was then succeeded by ‘Pukka tukka’ and ‘Jamie’s kitchen’. Airing in 2005 ‘Jamie’s school dinner was Oliver’s personal crusade to get increased standards for childrens school dinners, which ended with the government pledging to spent £280 million on school dinners for the next three years. Oliver has been the face of Sainsbury’s since 1998, a move which is earning him just over one million a year. One of the reasons hes gone down well in British is because he is very British- and people can relate to him. But this could be one of the reasons he ahsnt gone down so well overseas.
