There were rumors of a MacGruber movie for a long time, and now it is finally here. The parody Saturday Night Live ran of MacGyver had been a fan favorite, but the critics aren’t overwhelmed. At the theaters, it will be competing with Shrek Forever After, the fourth and last of the series. So far, the reviews have been somewhat positive, but kind of lukewarm.

MacGruber on the big screen
After all the television shorts and Super Bowl spots, MacGruber is now a feature film. This SNL related film will be competing for fast cash from the box office against a film with an SNL alumnus, Mike Meyers, in the lead role. The MacGruber character parodies action heroes from the 1980s, complete with mullet. Granted, the target audience may be too young to remember MacGyver, or John Carpenter’s masterpiece They Live. Rotten Tomatoes gives MacGruber a score above 50 percent, but Kurt Loder of MTV is non-plussed.
Shrek Forever After will do, donkey
Shrek Forever After is the fourth Shrek film, and it will be the last. Sequels tend to get repetitive, and Rotten Tomatoes gives a rating of just over 50 percent. Sequels can easily deflate a series, though some franchises are just lame in the crib to begin with. (For instance, Transformers.) However, it would appear that this final installment has one thing going for it, which is 3D. At least it might have good visuals, or Mise En Scene, as they say.
Survey says
We’ve all seen the MacGruber trailers and TV spots, so we know what we’re getting. It will be lowbrow, but it may be funny. There are precious few SNL movies that are worth watching. Shrek has the 3D to rely on. Something can look great, but if it’s a lousy movie, it’s still a lousy movie. A lot of people think 3D makes anything great, but it can end up to be pouring perfume on a pig.
